Title: The Thirteenth Man
Author: J.L. Doty
Release Date: September 6, 2016
Publisher: Harper Voyager Impulse
Genre: Action/Adventure
Format: Ebook
Alive, he's a political liability. Because the war with the Syndonese is not yet over, and while the King technically answers to the Nine-the Dukes of the various planets and moons of the Empire-there are others actually pulling his strings. And they certainly don't need Charlie Cass messing up their delicate plans. Unfortunately for them, that's what he's best at. And when the next war always seems to begin as soon as the ink is dry on the peace treaty, only a true hero can set things right. ![]() ![]() ![]() Meet the Author:Jim has eight published SF&F books, with two more due out in 2015. He's been unusually successful as a self-published writer; Child of the Sword went word-of-mouth viral about two years ago, and among all his books he has since sold close to 50,000 copies. With that success, he was able to quit his day-job as a running-dog-lackey for the Bourgeois capitalist establishment, and work for himself as a fulltime writer. He says his new boss is a real jerk--so demanding. Jim writes in three sub-genres: epic-fantasy, hard science fiction, and contemporary urban fantasy--no vampires--frequently with strong young-adult themes. The infamous "they" say that one should not write in multiple genres, but "they" also say, "write what you read," and Jim reads copious quantities of all three. Jim is also a scientist with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering; his specialty is laser physics. He has a big pet peeve regarding lasers as weapons in science fiction. He spent decades working in the laser and electro-optics industry, even did some research on laser weapons in the 80's. And when writers use a laser as a weapon in a story, they invariably get it wrong, usually by violating some basic law of physics. Jim gives a workshop on laser weapons, and what writers do wrong--no names please. Jim was born in Seattle, but he's lived most of his life in California, though he did live on the east coast and in Europe for a while. He now resides in Arizona with his wife Karen and their three cats: Tilda, Julia and Natasha. From a very early age he made up stories in his head, but he never considered writing. In his family you went to college, got a degree in something useful and got a real job, so he did the Ph.D. thing. But he was still making up those stories in his head, so he sat down and wrote a science fiction novel, and as he says, "It was 250,000 words of pure crap." It was the hardest decision he ever made, but he literally threw it away and turned to other writing projects. Science has always been a passion of Jim's, but writing is an addiction. He just recently published The Name of the Sword, the 4th and final book in the series that started with Child of the Sword. Right now he's working on Treason's Child, the prequel to A Choice of Treasons, which should be out in Q3 2015. Never Dead Enough, the 3rd took in The Dead Among Us, will follow near the end of 2015. Jim intends to keep on writing and publishing more stories, but no laser weapons. Visit him at http://www.jldoty.com ——————--Tour Schedule

Excerpt from Weeping in the Wings
by Terry Lynn Thomas:
After he left, I worked straight through until 11:30 and had just put my completed work on Dr. Geislerâs desk when a scream pierced the quietude of my office. I ran out into the corridor and followed the hysterical sounds toward the foyer. Bethany and I met in the hallway. Together we raced toward the noise.
The screaming turned into a hysterical incantation. âNo, no. Please. No.â
Minna. She stood near the front door, a black dressing gown flowing over her bony frame like a witchâs cloak. Her hair hung in wild curls the color of spun silver. She looked as though she could have raised her arms and cast a spell or hopped on a broom and flown away. Instead she held a piece of paper in her trembling hand. Scattered around her feet were the petals and stems of a desiccated bouquet of roses, a flower box from Podesta Baldocchi lay on its side, tossed away in the chaos.
Chloe sat at her desk, observing everything, missing nothing, her eyes huge. The maid, a young girl in a uniform two sizes too big, froze, holding the dust rag suspended in midair.
I moved toward Minna, desperate to help her, but Bethany waved me off.
âMinna, whatâs wrong?â
âSarah. Bethany.â She waved the paper she held in her hand through the air. âItâs Gregory. Heâs alive.â Her breathing became heavy and deep. She tore the letter up, threw the pieces on the floor, covered her face with her hands, and wept. Deep racking sobs coursed through her body, threatening to topple her.
Bethany swept in and put a comforting arm around Minnaâs shoulder. She spoke to her in the same sweet, disarming voice she had used on Mr. Collins. âCome on, dear. Letâs get you someplace safe. Weâll lock the house and make sure that Gregory isnât here. Iâll see to it personally.â She spoke to the maid. âItâs all right, young lady. Go see Mrs. McDougal for a cup of hot cocoa. Thereâs a good girl.â
âYouâll protect me, wonât you, Bethany? And Matthew. Heâll come for Matthew.â
âOf course.â Bethany spoke in a soothing voice. âIâll take care of everything.â Minna allowed herself to be led away. The two women made their way toward the staircase, while Bethany muttered comforting words in Minnaâs ear.
Just as they were about to reach the first landing and slip out of sight, Bethany called to me. âFind my husband. Tell him to hurry.â
Before heading off to search for Dr. Geisler, I picked up the torn pieces of paper that Minna had thrown on the floor and tucked them into my pocket. I had every intention of finding out the truth about Gregory Geisler.

EXCERPT: “Your nose is bleeding.” I brought my hand to my nose and nodded. Ugh. I snorted coke last night. My whole body contorted and I ran to Derek’s bathroom as quickly as I could. I made it just in time. Blood and acid trickled from my nostrils, vomit spewed violently from my mouth, and tears poured from my ducts. Eli caught up with me, closed the door, and pulled my hair back into a neat bun. His soft hands rubbed my back gently until finally, after what seemed like years, my body stopped betraying me and calmed. The stress Eli felt was written all over his face; he couldn’t imagine the idea of me being hurt, sick, under his watch. He handed me some tissues for my nose and held me to his chest on the tile floor. He didn’t say a word but I knew that he was worried; he felt betrayed by my choices. I hated that I had let him down again. I cried so hard I threw up again. ![]()

Luca came back with a guitar in one hand and a bottle of champagne and two glasses in the other. She raised an eyebrow. “You play?” “Occasionally,” he said, his lips stretching into a slow, sexy smile that had her heart pounding and her body aching for him. If he could do all that with a smile, she was a goner if he touched her. He set the guitar down and opened the champagne, handing her a glass. She sipped a little too quickly, needing something to take the edge off. With the girls gone, things had gone from safe to intensely intimate, even with the lurking presence of security and the paparazzi she figured were out there somewhere. It didn’t help that he wasn’t speaking, just sitting there, drinking his champagne and watching her watch him, that smile still on his lips, sitting so close the heat from his body warmed hers even though he didn’t touch her. He knew the effect he was having on her. Damn him. He was enjoying every second of it. He picked up the guitar and absently strummed a few chords, tuning the strings and plucking out a few notes. The firelight flickered over him, highlighting his chiseled features, the biceps that bunched as he played. His fingers moved across the strings and she shivered, too easily picturing those fingers moving over her skin. She had no doubt he’d play her just as well. When he started quietly singing, her eyes flew open and she sucked in a small breath of surprise. His voice floated to her, deep and smooth. Her gaze met his and held, those dark eyes burning into hers while he sang. Ach koritsi mou. Oh, my girl. She breathed in one shaky breath after another as he sang about the unrevealed parts of his soul belonging to her. How he’d waited so long for her to come into his life, and every time he sang the words ach koritsi mou it was like he was laying claim to her, branding her as his. His voice died away with the last note of the song. Still they sat staring into each other’s eyes. He put the guitar down and her breathing sped up as he leaned in. She watched him until their lips met, then she closed her eyes and gave herself over to him. She wrapped her arms around his neck, her fingers tangling in his hair. He hauled her closer, pressing her down into the sand. His lips left hers to trail down her neck and she arched against him, trying to bring him nearer. “Koritsi mou,” he murmured against her skin. My girl. Oh yes, she was his. It might not last. It might not be real in the harsh light of day, but for that moment, on the sand beneath the soft moonlight, with the salty breeze of the sea flowing over them as he moved over her, kissing her until her body begged for more, she was his, totally and completely his. ![]()

So when she gets a chance to compete on a reality dating show she decides to risk it all for love in the biggest game of her life. The city girl is surprised how much she enjoys switching her high heels for cowboy boots and pedicures for mud treatments—and not the kind you find at a day spa. And she’s falling hard for Wil Parker, the sexy, rugged farmer at the centre of the show. Amidst the chaos, tantrums and editing tape, the heat and passion between Emily and Wil reaches boiling point. But can they survive the imminent explosion, let alone the fallout? ![]() ‘A pig sty,’ said Emily as she stood on the lower rung of the fence and looked into the muddy home to eight fat, pink pigs. ‘You can’t expect me to go in there?’ ‘They need feeding.’ She shook her head as the pigs rushed towards the fence line snorting and snuffling. They were enormous and filthy, trotters and bellies streaked with mud. ‘They stink,’ she said. ‘A lot.’ Wil threw his head back and laughed. ‘You’re not going to discriminate based on scent now, are you?’ A smile crept onto her lips. ‘I guess not.’ ‘So I probably shouldn’t use this moment to tell you that you can’t let these pigs near your hands. They’ve strong snouts and can bite your fingers clean off.’ Emily jumped off the fence and took two steps back. ‘No. You shouldn’t use this moment to tell me that because I’m not going in there now. Are you serious? They could bite my finger off?’ ‘Fingers. Multiple. And yes, I’m deadly serious.’ Emily’s mouth fell open. She shook her head. ‘No bloody way. Nah-ah. Not happening, Wil. You’re on your own.’ Again his head rolled back and he roared with laughter, obviously finding his tormenting highly entertaining. She wasn’t amused. He eventually looked back at her, still grinning, and said, ‘There’s a fence. They won’t be able to come near us.’ Emily sighed. ‘Thank God for that.’ She placed a hand on her chest, felt the thumping underneath. ‘My heart is thundering here.’ He pressed his lips together, but was still smiling, his dimples on full display. Despite his cheeky taunts, he had Emily panting. He stepped closer, so the other girls were out of earshot. ‘I wouldn’t purposefully put you in danger.’ ‘I guess I don’t know you well enough yet to understand this mischievous side.’ He reached for her hand, held it in his. Her breath caught at the sensation pulsing through her. It wasn’t like the other times he held her hand to lead her somewhere; there was an air of intimacy to the way he entwined his fingers with hers. ‘That’s something we’ll have to rectify,’ he whispered. Whispering was the sexiest thing ever when it was coming from Wil’s lips. Her body warmed and tingled. She peered up into his blue eyes, then down to his lips. They were long and full, perfect for kissing. A gentle current swirled between them like a magnet, pulling her to him, and he to her. ‘Yes,’ she managed to say though her voice was breathy. His big chest expanded on a deep inhale. Emily wanted to press both her palms against him and feel the muscle she knew existed underneath that t-shirt. The delicious warmth in her limbs spread to her breasts, and down to her belly where it pulled and continued lower, unravelling and stirring her long-dormant O. Seemingly snapping out of his daydream, Wil straightened and took a step back. He managed a tight smile though his eyelids were still heavy hooded. ‘We better get to it.’ Emily nodded and released her hand from his. ![]() ![]() Jacquie is an author of a number of novels, novellas and short stories and is published in the genres of contemporary, fantasy and magic-realism romance. I only have, uh, one bed.” I could feel my cheeks heating as I said it but I went on anyway. “And I’m not letting some strange man sleep with me. Also, you won’t fit on the couch.” I indicated my little loveseat which was barely big enough for one normal sized person to stretch out on—there was no way a seven-foot tall alien would fit. He frowned. “I will sleep on the floor at the foot of your bed, if necessary, but I will not leave you alone. That would not be safe.” “Why not?” I demanded. “You killed the, uh, assassin-bot thing.” I gestured at the shiny silver jumble on my carpet. Kristoff’s strange eyes narrowed. “Assassin-droid.
