Arkham
Marteeka Karland
(Bones MC, #5)
Published by: Changeling Press
Publication date: January 30th 2020
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Rain — The gangs of the underground can be brutal. I know this well and have the scars to prove it. So when a team of rough-looking men start nosing around the slums of Rockwell, I make it my business to know what they’re up to. One in particular catches my eye. He’s rough and scary looking, but his touch is gentle when it needs to be. He’s older and more experienced in every way than me, but I’m still drawn to him. I’m not sure why, but I want him. And when I let him take me, I’ll savor the experience until it’s time to go.

Arkham — The little pixie warrior is a conundrum if ever there was one. She’s strong and capable but scared inside and out. I can’t fix what’s broken inside her, but I can share her burdens and make her part of my circle. I’ll take her with me, with Bones MC. She’ll be protected there.

But who’s gonna protect her from me?

EXCERPT:

“Just stay put, little lady.” It was the same guy who’d nabbed her in the first place. She took the opportunity to study him. Aside from being a big-ass motherfucker, he was probably the scariest looking person she’d ever seen. A thick beard covered the lower half of his face, but he was scarred all over. What part of his body wasn’t scarred was covered in tattoos. A thin scar ran from his hairline, through his right eyebrow, and down his cheek to his jaw. His eyes were another thing. They were strange, dual colored. The right one was a rich amber while the left one was a vibrant blue. She wondered if the scar had anything to do with the strange coloring but doubted it since the injured eye was darker than the other and both seemed to focus on her intently. The one thing about the guy that scared her most were those eyes. Looking into them she could see they were dead. Void of any emotion. The eyes of a killer, cold blooded or otherwise. He’d slit a man’s throat without batting an eyelash.

He shrugged out of his military jacket and the vest underneath, tossing them to the floor. His neck popped several times as he rolled it on his shoulders.

“Whatcha got?” The leader of the second team she’d been watching stepped into their group. He was dressed in jeans, a white T-shirt and a black leather vest. A patch on the chest proclaimed him “president.”

“Five dumbasses trying to be badasses,” Goose answered. The man sounded more than a little miffed. “Fuckers winged me.”

“Jesus, Goose,” Trucker said, slamming his door after he hopped out. “Why are you still whining? Are you a pussy? Cause you know Bones don’t allow pussies.”

“They let you in, didn’t they?”

“Yeah, but I ain’t whining about getting a scratch. I bet you ain’t even bleeding.”

“Fuck you.”

“You already said that.” Trucker was laughing openly at Goose, and the other man just scowled. Rain had seen more than one such argument turn into a deadly brawl. These guys seemed to enjoy it. In fact, it seemed like part of their culture. One an outsider like her couldn’t understand.

“Would you two knock it off?” the first guy said, looking annoyed but not angry. “Arkham?”

The man who’d captured her sighed, scrubbing his hand over his neck. “She was their lookout, Cain. But she expected us to take care of them.”

Cain crossed his arms over his chest. “How so?”

“Called them in once we separated, knowing we’d always have eyes on each other. Told them we were all together, not that we’d split. They did exactly what she expected. Rushed the two on the ground in plain sight. Her thought was Shadow and I could protect our brothers before those idiots could harm Torpedo and Goose.”

Cain gave Rain a good hard stare, seeming to be trying to see into her soul. “You sure about her? She might have been trying to make sure her gang had the best chance of killin’ your team.”

Arkham shrugged. “Maybe, but I don’t think so.”

“You trust her, then?” Cain raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms over his chest.

“No.” Arkham’s answer was immediate. Which pissed Rain off.

“Now, wait just a minute!”

“She mentioned the kid,” Arkham added, ignoring her as if she hadn’t said anything. “Said word was he was bein’ held until an offer of a ransom was made. Might want to let Azriel know.”

Torpedo swore. “Why the fuck won’t anyone talk? She can’t be the only one who’s heard this.”

Arkham shrugged. “Maybe I’m less intimidating than you. You know. Cause I’m so pretty.”

“We’re not doing very well in this. I don’t understand why Ivanovich needs us. His men could get the same results we’ve gotten.”

“We want you here because you have a way with the populous of the eastern sector.”

A large man in an expensive-looking suit approached them. He had the look of a predator, but a refined one. One that blended in with the elite of the city. Any city.

“If you’d let us do this our way, we’d’ve found the kid already,” Cain said. “It’s time you told us exactly what we’re doin’. I’m tired of fuckin’ around here, Azriel.”

“We have a tracking device on the child. All the children have them, with their parents’ consent, for just this reason.”

“We’ll, I’d say your tracker isn’t workin’ very well. This is the first mention we’ve had of the kid.”

“There’s interference. I know you’ve checked the sewers and subway beneath the city in that area, but we’re sure he’s there somewhere.”

“Maybe the tracker got removed. Maybe it was found and removed.”

“It’s working. We can see him moving from time to time. Probably when they take him to a new location. And the tracker also monitors his vital signs. If it were removed, the bio monitoring would tell us.”

Rain knew there were severe undercurrents surrounding the men. She was reminded of some of the gangs in the city. It was a power struggle with them. Most did everything they could to recruit the young. Those they couldn’t win over, they enslaved. Or killed. Eventually, no one dared turn them down when they came looking for service and tried to pick the least brutal gangs before they were drafted. Her included.

“The young woman knows something,” Azriel said, nodding in her direction. “She’s one of them.”

“She’s not,” Arkham stated solidly. There was no doubt in his voice. No question he was right.

“You said yourself she set your team up,” Azriel pressed. “It was just luck they didn’t kill all of you.”

“Those boys wouldn’t know how to kill if you put a knife in their hand and the blade at someone’s throat.” Arkham seemed to scoff at the idea. Rain knew better.

“They might surprise you,” she muttered.

Instantly, all eyes were on her. She winced. Not a way to gain her freedom.

“Might as well explain.” Cain scrubbed a hand over his face as if this were all a big hassle he preferred to avoid.

When she glanced nervously at Arkham, he stared back at her, the intensity of those dual-colored eyes unnerving. Lifting her chin, she looked away and shut her mouth stubbornly.

“I don’t have time for this fuckin’ shit,” Cain muttered.

“I’ll talk to her.” She snapped her head around to look at Arkham again. He had a look of grim determination on his face. “No matter how long it takes.” That look said he was looking forward to the interrogation.

“Now, wait just a Goddamned minute!”

Arkham ignored her and tossed her over his shoulder. With her hands still zip-tied behind her, there was nothing Rain could do other than kick a little. If she fell, she risked hurting herself worse than she had when she’d face-planted on the roof of the theater. Finally she just yelled at him, “Put me down!” Which did no good.

He swatted her ass. Hard.

When she stopped fussing, he grunted as if satisfied with her response. “Bastard,” she muttered, but didn’t struggle further. The sting of the swat startled her, but also made her insides tingle. What the hell had just happened? Even now, his hand rested on the side of her ass he’d just spanked, rubbing through her jeans as if to soothe her. In reality, she knew he was copping a feel, but she found she really didn’t mind when she’d always rebuffed anyone who tried to touch her. Without fail. Now this man comes along, manhandling her at every opportunity, and she… liked it? What the fuck?

EXCERPT:

An hour later, I stand in an ornate ballroom at the Ryder mansion.

In a tux.

And my world has stopped spinning. Or perhaps it’s simply whirling too fast. At this point, it’s hard to know.

Myla Lewis is here.

Father steps up beside me. “How was the chat with Silvinio, my son?”

“Not too productive. He volunteered that he’s no longer gambling.” I leave out the tidbits about the Tithe and Aldred, since Father thinks those two can do no wrong.

“Is he gambling the demon fighting circuit again?” asks Father.

“Most likely.”

Father then launches into a recap on the latest winners and losers on the circuit. At least, I think that’s what he’s talking about. It’s hard to pay attention.

Myla is crossing the room.

And she’s heading in my direction.

At some point, Father stops talking. Myla pauses a few yards away. Her back is toward me, but even so, I’m a hunter. There’s no missing the slightest twitch in her ears. No one else stands near Myla. Only me and my father.

Myla must be listening to us.

My thoughts race. What did Walker say before? Myla might find me intriguing, and Walker didn’t want Myla to turn heartsick. And now, she seems to be paying attention. This is bad. True, I could be imagining her interest. But even if it’s one chance on a thousand that I could hurt her, I simply can’t risk it. Having Myla in my life will cause her nothing but pain, one way or another.

That leaves only one thing to do. Follow Walker’s instructions. His words echo through my mind.

If you ever encounter Miss Lewis, you should play the haughty thrax. Look down on her demonic side. She’ll hate it—and you—forever.

As Father walks off, I keep my gaze locked in Myla’s outline. She still seems alert, but isn’t fidgeting or clenching her fists. A wave of relief moves through me. Maybe I was imagining the connection between us. Every hunter makes mistakes.

Clang. Myla knocks over a can onto the floor.

Now I could leave, but my feet move toward Myla on their own. “Are you alright, Miss?”

She turns to face me and I could cheer for joy. Up close, she’s lovelier than I imagined. Life and light glitters in her brown eyes. My arms ache to envelop her. She smells of cinnamon and sunshine.

“I’m fine,” she says simply. “I dropped an empty can, that’s all.”

We pause. Lines of energy and interest flow between us, connecting our hearts. No, no, no. This isn’t supposed to happen. And it means I should definitely leave.

And I want to.

Yet I can’t.

EXCERPT:

I pushed out a breath rather dramatically, “Oh, boy. Well, I can say with compete honesty that I did not expect this kind of action and excitement this evening.”

He raised an eyebrow at me while I signed and pushed the papers back to him, “And yet you’re still here. It’s intriguing, really.”

“I know, right?” I grinned, “Next.”

“Common Safeword and Consent Policy. This is very important, Blue, especially because you’re new to this world. You’ll see things that surprise you downstairs. You may see things that disturb you or concern you. But I want you to know that our members’ safety is our priority. That’s why all members and their guests must adhere to a common safeword policy. We push limits here, Blue. We skirt the edge of our boundaries, waltz across the line, see if we can push it just a little further.”

Law came alive as he spoke, eyes sparkling with passion. He was telling me about something that outwardly seemed so crude and taboo but explained it all with such poise and conviction. This world was important to him, it belonged to him, and he belonged to it. It chilled me to see that kind of affinity. It gave me goosebumps to listen to him explain these rules.

He continued, “It is possible that someone might say no as a reflex, without really meaning it. For some, saying no is part of the fun. Consent always has to be given explicitly here. And it can still be given even if someone is screaming for you to stop. But it only works if everyone understands and follows the rules and we enforce them fiercely. No one here should ever fear being forced to do something they haven’t consented to.”

I watched him in consideration, “Am I gonna need any safewords tonight, Law?”

I saw a flicker of interest brush across his eyes as I immediately realized my tone had sounded inviting. Unintentionally inviting.

I shouldn’t have said that.

Why did I say that?

“No, not unless you consent to putting yourself in that position,” he looked suddenly disappointed, “And as you are happily married and without your husband this evening, I imagine you won’t want to do that.”

“No,” the word tasted bad coming out of my mouth, “I don’t want to do that tonight.”

“Then you won’t, Blue. Not tonight.”

Not tonight?

Author Bio:

Brynn Ford is an independent author of romance in all of its beautiful and sensually taboo forms. She is a lover of the dark, twisted, and playful and strives to bring the unmentionable aspects of passionate romance into her stories.

Brynn resides in the Midwest with her husband and sons, whom she expects will someday be embarrassed by their mom's books. When she isn't obsessively writing, you may find her binge watching favorite shows while eating far too much junk food or fanatically reading, always seeking to lose herself in the emotional roller coaster of a damn good story.

She is quite the idealist, despite her fascination with the wicked and warped aspects of humanity. Some of her stories may run out of words before a happily ever after, but she's a firm believer that her characters continue to live on outside the pages in the minds of her readers. Stories don't end just because there aren't anymore pages to turn.

The Sound of Love
Senses of Love Book 1
by Kyle Shoop
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Words than can't be spoken can still be sung.

Sometimes the most beautiful relationships between two individuals blossom from moments of tragedy.

Charlotte and John grew up as young orphans in the secluded outskirts of a rural town. Each day, they’d sneak out to the nearby forest to escape the cold grasp of the orphanage’s tyrant-ruler, by creating an imaginary kingdom together. However, their worlds, and the safety that came from their friendship, were suddenly ripped apart when they got caught.

Years later, Charlotte conquered the marketing world in downtown Portland. Having gained normalcy in her life since her days in the orphanage, Charlotte never expected her world to be turned upside down by John abruptly being thrust back into her life.

However, the years since the orphanage had not at all been kind to John, leaving him unable to open up to Charlotte about the details. So, she reignites John’s love for playing music, finding that his songwriting is the only way to help him express what he otherwise has difficulty saying. But in doing so, the reunited couple discovers that John’s love for music may not have been the only fire waiting to be rekindled.

Would what began as two children playing in the woods in the heart of tragedy blossom into long-awaited, and much desired, love?

“I want your word that you won’t hurt her,” Bray said. “She’s under my protection.”

Eilith glided closer, leaning in, smelling him as she exhaled a soft, putrid breath.

Bray’s eyes slammed shut and his nostrils flared with a scrunched nose. This was going to be hell. Willow would owe him big time when they were done with whatever the hell this creature was.

“You think you have any power here at all?” Eilith laughed, her breath caressing his neck, a sharp tongue skimming over his skin just below his ear, drawing blood. “I could eat you alive, and no one would ever know what happened to you.”

Swallowing nervously, his eyes opened, feeling the drip of blood cascade down his neck. “Are you a vampire?” he whispered.

“Some call me an energy vampire,” Eilith said, “but no. I am an ordinary Nightblood turned demon.” She reached behind her back and revealed a scroll and a feather pen, already dipped in ink. “Sign your name so we can complete this transaction.”

The lump that had once formed in his throat grew even bigger. “Demon?” He hadn’t wanted to believe it might be true.

“Demon Sorceress, the one and only.” Eilith sounded quite pleased with herself.

He took the pen, his actions again not his own as he stared at the scroll. He was back in charge, if only for a moment, while she let him willingly sign his name. What choice did he have? He wasn’t giving away his soul, only his virginity. That didn’t mean anything to a demon, right?

Excerpt

No more secrets… no more lies,

Eyes once clenched tight now wide open.

Not too late... don’t hesitate…

It’s up to you… it’s up to me,

What each of us chooses to see.

Once the helicopters reached where they last detected the unidentified craft, the copter pilots set down in clearing approximately a half-mile from the site. Air Force military boots hit the ground running; trained military canines led the way through the pitch dense forest. Unsure of what they would find when they got to the craft landing site, Sergeant Trevon Loch’s special team of men and women were trained to fight and were ready to give all for their country.

As the soldiers closed in on their prey the dogs cowered. Their ears no longer perked up and their tails hung down flat against their hind legs which were very unusual behavior for these brave beasts. They were trained by soldiers to obey orders as any other soldier normally would. The dogs were to attack first unless otherwise ordered to stand down.

Tonight, a sense of eeriness settled upon the squadron of soldiers. They were not used to being in this posture here in the mountains on US soil. Neither were the German Shepherd’s they had brought along. If the craft landed near this area, there were no lights to identify its specific coordinates. The soldiers wore camouflage uniforms with their faces painted to help them blend in with the forest vegetation providing extra cover under the full moon. Except an occasional owl, coyote, soldier snapping dead twigs under their boots or intermittent panting of the dogs all remained quiet in this part of the forest. They knew they were close from the coordinates received from tactical command.

Sergeant Trevon Loch motioned his platoon with special hand signals to stop, get down and listen. Time passed quietly and at a snail’s pace. His troops were disciplined they could wait out any enemy no matter how long it took. Tiny hairs on the back of his neck stood up giving him a chill. Sergeant Loch knew exactly what that meant from being in Kuwait. Over there he had a sixth sense about hidden bombs. They would stay put until he understood the danger clearer and was able to devise a safe plan of attack.

Without warning, light emanating from under the ship created sparks from the hidden craft. The heat it generated intensified, creating sizzling mounds of dry grass and leaves under it from the intense heat. Within seconds it left behind only minute orange glowing bits of disintegrated cooling ash. A deafening whirring noise created a sense of chaos among the dogs and the soldiers. The obsidian sphere rose two hundred feet in the air within seconds, rotating in a circle. Trapezium-shaped four-sided lights none of which were parallel blinked randomly near the expansive windows of the craft. The occupants inside appeared more frightening than the soldiers expected in the time they were able to lock eyes on the aliens inside the spacecraft and wrap their heads around what they were witnessing.

Before the soldiers were able to fire their weapons to get off a warning shot, the craft vanished. Sergeant Loch identifying a form left behind ordered, “Hold your fire.” Attempting to refocus his eyes from the blinding light Sargent Trevon Loch noticed a single silhouette standing in the center of the field directly under the light of the full moon.

The human form was easy to recognize since it was aided further by the fading glow of embers lighting the field. It was a young woman. She appeared to be in her mid-twenties. Her shoulder-length blonde hair appeared as if it were floating in the air due to the updraft created by the craft. She was wearing a mid-century cotton house dress. Sergeant Loch immediately noticed when he approached her that she was missing her shoes. There was no way that she had walked here barefoot this late at night on her own. He knew instantly that she must have been aboard the craft. The young woman stood quietly gazed off into the darkness of the forest, unaware of her current surroundings or the soldiers quietly approaching. Her pale skin and stone-like statue resembled a concrete statue one would normally see when visiting a park. As Sergeant Loch came closer, he noticed two other females lying on the ground, hidden by her shadow.

To keep a roof over her head, she works in the printing industry as a graphic production artist. She shares her home with her husband and daughter, and a menagerie of rescued fur-babies.

I’m their savior they say, but there are no saviors amid monsters. These princes who are tasked to keep me safe are keeping secrets of their own. Secrets that will kill me.

So, how am I meant to rid the realm of evil when I feel the dark spreading through my veins?

EXCERPT:

I shake so hard, my hands curling into balls. “They could have killed you.”

“I told you to stay in the room,” he reprimands me.

“Right. And if I had obeyed your stupid command, you’d be dead. Then what?”

“You coming out here could have gotten you killed,” he roars, his cheeks flushing with anger. Fingers squeeze my arms tight as he holds me so close, so damn hard. “I want to spank your ass for pulling that shit out there.”

We stare each other down, and that burning fire in my chest explodes. All I see are those full lips, the look in his eyes drowning in need. “Let me go!” I yell.

Instead, he angles closer, and my body responds instantly. Our mouths clash and our kiss is primal and chaotic. Teeth and lips and hands everywhere. I rake through his hair, fisting it, wrenching him closer. I bite down on his lip, and sweet, metallic blood lingers on my tongue. My hands seize his collar, and I’m hauling him against me. I’ve been dreaming of kissing him since seeing him in the bar, and now this is actually happening.

I may hate him so much, but I want him even more.

Strong hands grasp my hips and he has me in his arms and off my feet so fast, it takes me off guard. I clasp my legs around his hips and he pins me to the side of the car, kissing me with the hunger of a wolf.
