Political consultant Amy Fields only experienced jealousy once in her life, and that’s the way she’d like to keep it. Watching her older sister carry-on with the boy she absolutely adored in high school enough to make her never want to feel second-best again.

Now, successful in her own right. She’s making strides in her career and meeting interesting people, but one client takes a keen interest in her life – so much so, he’s determined to ensure she never finds a happy ending with the boy she loved long ago.

Prince Lucio Aussa can have any woman he wants, but he’s grown tired of superficial relationships. When his brother convinces him that he can find the perfect bride online, Lucio reluctantly agrees to go along with the plan. The search dredges up old feelings about Amy’s older sister, and prompts him to want to rekindle their broken relationship. But when the internet search points to Amy as his perfect mate, that changes everything. Now, he must reconcile the feelings he had for her sister with the realization that Amy is far more interesting than she ever was. To make matters worse, as his feelings for her grow, an enemy emerges threatening to ruin any hope of love for either of them.

Can the overcome their preconceived notions about each other and find common ground together or will yet another obstacle stand in their way?

 Excerpt

She stilled and the sensation disappeared once the man went into the elevator and was out of sight. Her pulse returned to normal. She waited another few seconds and headed back out into the dreary evening. The fog made the world seem darker.

Amy opened the door, head down, and walked right into a wall of muscled chest. Worried it was the man in the bowler hat, she swallowed a cry, stepped back into the foyer of the building and looked up at the man who was at least a foot taller than her. Her breath caught in her throat. Lucio Aussa still seemed larger than life.

"Amy Fields?" His rich tones were deeper and brought a chill of adult awareness.

She dropped her umbrella to the linoleum. She knelt down to pick it up, as did he. They almost bumped heads but she let him get her umbrella and he handed it back to her. "You're prettier than I remember."

"You remember me?" She straightened, her legs shaky.

"You're Evie's little sister." He stood too.

Right. Her stomach shouldn't flip. He had to get married soon, as the world knew, and her sister was the Fields girl he’d been interested in. It was too bad Evie intended to marry His Grace Michael Flynn, and be his duchess. Why was Lucio here, speaking to her right now? "That's right. My sister doesn't work with me or anything…”

"It's raining pretty heavily. Let me give you a ride." He opened the door, allowing a cool rush of air inside.

There was no reason her stomach should tense. His dark, shining hair curled over his ears and those dark brown eyes tempted her to swoon. Amy Fields never swooned. She lowered her head, her face hot with embarrassment. "I don't want to be a bother, Your Highness."

"I came to talk to you,” he said. “So it would be my pleasure, Amy."

He had? Her named rolled off his tongue with ease. Her chest warmed from his nearness, and her cheeks must be scarlet at this point. "If you’re here to order an analysis of your country, you’ll need to come back in the morning and sign a contract with my boss."

"I'm not here to hire you." A servant with a six-foot wide umbrella met them at the front door and Lucio led her toward his waiting limo on the street corner. "Not exactly anyway."

The servant opened the rear passenger door and she slid in across the leather seat. As Lucio closed the door, sitting so close to her their legs touched, she was rocketed back to high school Amy, who’d stared at him with longing as she wished he'd notice her, but then her sister would jump in front of her and throw herself at him. Evie had been relentless in her quest to one day be a princess. Amy shook off the memory as the car rolled down the street. She said, "I live out in Clapham."

"I know. You're doing pretty well for yourself." Drops of rain glistened on Lucio’s shoes. "I was hoping you'd join me for a quick dinner so we can talk."

Dinner? With him? It seemed like a dream where any second someone would yell “gotcha”, but she reigned in her imagination. He was a prince, and he’d belonged to Evie. She lifted her chin, intending to say no, but his brown eyes persuaded her to change her mind. "Okay. Dinner. I am curious, I’ll admit."

Giving in was a bad trait she needed to work on. His hand brushed against her leg but jerked back fast so she knew it had been an accident. However, the jolt she felt was unexpected. "Thanks." He turned toward the driver. "Please take us to Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester."

...”. a powerful fantasy that combines a coming of age theme with insights into changing family relationships, the impact of past worlds on present lives, and a shy girl’s unexpected changes." - Midwest Book Review

“The plot is beautifully layered and intermingled with a wonderful element of fantasy while avoiding unnecessary frills and complexities. Well executed narration and pacing foster strong character development while sustaining the promised mystery. The writing is sharp, knowledgeable and sincere. Everything melds together flawlessly, offering a refreshing study of character that carries the story with incredible ease.

The Shadow Girl Excerpt © Misty Mount 2017

The entire family agreed that the meal was delicious, and my mother sat at the other end of the table beaming. I looked from her and around at everyone else and thought, “I did this.” Somehow the astonishment of me having a dinner guest had brought the whole family together at our very best. It was the perfect evening, like one you might see on an episode of the television series that Terra and I had just watched. It was funny how they were those same annoyingly hip shows that I had previously mocked, but was now reluctantly opening to.
Grandmother dropped her fork and it clattered against the tile floor. The metallic clinking was a portentous sound that brought silence to the room. Each person at the table turned in attention to the older woman, but Grandmother’s gaze was leveled with mine alone.
She can see right through me, I thought as I matched her stare. Those dark, sunken eyes of hers seemed more shadowy than ever before, and she was so still I thought she may have been catatonic.
Somebody say something, I begged internally, feeling frozen and mesmerized. Somebody say something.
My grandmother opened her mouth, and I regretted my irrational wishing. “Angelica, you’re back! How did you make it through the shadow?” Her voice sounded odd. It was still raspy with age, but a higher, lighter note resonated through it as though her vocal chords had shed a few years.
My mother stood up and quickly walked around the table behind my grandmother. She placed a hand on her shoulder and said quietly, “Mother, are you feeling well?”
“Well, of course I’m well! Angelica’s back! Isn’t it exciting?” Grandmother lifted her arm and pointed a knobby finger at me. “She’s here with us. Right there.” I stared in dread at her trembling hand and the brittle nail at the end of her targeting index finger.
“Mother’s just a little tired today.” My own mother’s voice was apologetic. “It looks like you’re done eating, so how about you lie down for a bit?”
“No!” Grandmother shouted, slamming her palms against the table and tossing the rest of her silverware to the floor. “Don’t you see? She could disappear again! She’ll go away if we let her! We have to pay attention!”
I couldn’t remember having seen Grandmother so out of control. It was chilling to watch, like another more commanding being was exploding out of her.
“You’re getting yourself worked up over nothing,” my father spoke up. He stood as well, swooping in and removing her plate and glass from before her the way a parent might do to prevent further damage during a toddler’s tantrum.
I didn’t dare turn my head to look at Terra, but I could sense that her form was rigid and alert beside me. I was positive she was regretting her visit and plotting her escape.
“Hold on to her! Hurry before she disappears again. Angelica! Don’t go, Angelica! We miss you so much when you’re away!” Grandmother’s eyes were wide and frenzied, her arms gesturing madly. She tried to stand but there was a tremor that seemed to rock her body from head to foot.
My parents each took an elbow and pivoted her away from the table and toward her bedroom. The old woman fought against them feebly, but her frail arms didn’t do much to alter her course. She kept her bird-like gaze aimed at me for as long as she could until it became too awkward or uncomfortable to extend her neck in my direction.
We could still hear muffled ranting coming from Grandmother’s quarters even after she was out of sight.
“Whoa, that was so weird,” commented Keane in one long exhale.
“I’ve never seen Grandmother act that way before,” Ivy chimed in. She looked frightened and there were tears sparkling at the edges of her eyes.
“I bet we’re all gonna be that loony when we’re old,” Bram said rudely with an exaggerated chuckle.
I heard Terra speak up, “This is the most exciting dinner I think I’ve ever been a part of—no offense.” I turned toward her and noticed she was grinning from ear to ear.
I laughed in a combination of nerves and relief. “Sorry about that.”
“Maybe we should clean up after dinner because Mother will be upset,” Ivy suggested empathetically.
No one objected. We all brushed shoulders in a quiet dance around the kitchen, scraping food into the garbage disposal, rinsing dishes, and putting away the leftovers of what had almost been our perfect dinner.
“I should probably go,” Terra said once the dishwasher was humming and my siblings had scattered.
I felt a stab of worry in my chest. “Please don’t think this will happen every time if you decide to come more often.”
Misty Mount has written since age five and was first published at fourteen. By day she’s a caregiver, wife and mother to a young son but during the quiet hours of night she becomes a novelist. She resides in Wichita, Kansas.

    Excerpt

ìWhat the hell is wrong with you?î Scarlett asked, taking in my pale face and trembling hands.
ìSome bloke just walked in here and asked me to have sex with him!î
Uggh! And heíd been all greasy black hair, gold fillings and overgrown ítache, like an aging porn star. I stifled the urge to throw up.
Shaking her head in disgust, Scarlett rolled her eyes. ìHate to break it to you, precious, but you are working in a brothel, you know.î
    ìButóî
ìBut nothing. What the hell did you expect him to ask for, a burger and fries?î
ìI kept telling him I was only the receptionist, but he didnít seem to care. He told me heíd pay extra if he had to.î I fought to calm my racing heart and queasy stomach.
Scarlettís eyes narrowed. She didnít look happy. It occurred to me that maybe I should have kept my mouth shut.
ìWhat do you mean extra? How much extra?î
ìUmÖî I swallowed hard. ìThree hundred dollars.î
The temperature in the room plummeted as a blast of ice-cold fury filled the air.
ìWhat!î she screeched. ìAnd you turned him down?î
    ìButóî
ìJesus Christ!î she hissed and bolted over to the waiting room. ìShit, where the hell is he now?î
My glance flickered toward the door. Scarlettís followed. For the briefest of moments, I thought she was going to drag him back in and make him apologize for being an insensitive bastard.
Instead her eyes widened in shock. ìWhat! You let him walk out of here? You selfish fucking cow. You mightnít have wanted him, but what about the rest of us girls? Three hundred bucks and you just let him walk out of here? Jesus! Prue is going to go off her nut when she hears about this.î
Prue was the Madame and owner of Heavenly Pleasures. An outwardly serene woman with immaculate hair, but nonetheless seriously scary with a sinister reputation, not unlike Cruella DeVille on a bad day, and therefore someone I did not want to cross.
ìOh, please donít say anything,î I begged, on the verge of tears. ìLook, I promise if he comes back in, Iíll call you out straight awayóbefore JoJo. Just donít mention it to Prue. I was just a bit taken aback, thatís all, and didnít know what to do.î
This part was true. Haggling for sex wasnít something weíd covered in secretarial college. Maybe it was the look of pure terror on my face or possibly Scarlett was in a rare compassionate mood, but after a momentís hesitation she stopped scowling, her expression softening in what could well have been pity.
ìOkay. I wonít say anythingóthis time,î came with reluctance. ìBut of course Iíll expect some more bookings, if you get my meaning.î
Yesóher meaning was loud and clear. She was blackmailing me, but I was in no position to protest. I nodded.
Her mood lightened. ìHey, cheer up, will you? So what if some ugly punter wanted a poke? Jeez, youíre not the first one to have the hard word put on them by some tosser, believe me. Guys come in here, think theyíre Godís gift to women and although they know youíre not a worker, it gives them a sick thrill to think they can convince you to drop to your knees for a blow jobóeven if it is for three hundred dollars.î She threw me a disgusted look and shook her head in disbelief. ìI reckon in their pathetic little minds theyíre convinced theyíve seduced you with their hot looks and charm. Losers, thatís what they are. Anyway, I suppose itís probably just as well you didnít take him up on it.î
ìReally?î I brightened, seeing it as a sign I was forgiven.
ìYeah, the girls would have flattened you if you had.î
Oh, God. I felt ill. What on earth had happened to my perfect life?
Two months ago, I had never met or even spoken to a prostitute. Two months ago, Iíd had no idea brothels even existed outside the red light district of Kingís Cross. Two months ago, Iíd thought French, Spanish and Greek were southern Europeans rather than hooker code for certain sexual practices. And two months ago, Iíd been happily looking forward to marrying my fiancÈ, Brad, an up-and-coming lawyer who planned to be the youngest junior partner in the law firm where he worked.
Yes, two months ago my life had all been mapped out before me.
But that was before a day out in the city to catch up with an old friend triggered a series of events that would ultimately bring about my downfall. Yep, it was at that point I can honestly say my life had bit the big one, nose-diving to newly discovered depths of desperation and despair. I was completely screwed and I didnít have anyone to blame but myselfÖ

As winter turns into spring, Leander’s chilly demeanor begins to thaw, but danger prowls through the mountains, and Lee has a secret that lurks beneath his elegant clothes and rippling physique. Something that compels him to reject what he desires the most.
Can he learn to see the good in himself and finally allow his heart to love, and be loved in return?

˃˃˃ An engrossing and captivating tale of romance, Moondance will keep you enthralled to the very last page.

    Genres: New Adult, Romance

I NEVER KNEW WHEN HE’D COME TO ME. ONLY THAT HE WOULD.

I’d never even kissed a boy the night I met Stone. The night I saw him kill. The night he spared my life. That was only the beginning.

He turns up in my car again and again, dangerous and full of raw power. “Drive,” he tells me, and I have no choice. He’s a criminal with burning green eyes, invading my life and my dreams.

The police say he’s dangerously obsessed with me, but I’m the one who can’t stop thinking about him. Maybe it’s wrong to let him touch me. Maybe it’s wrong to touch him back. Maybe these twisted dates need to stop. Except he feels like the only real thing in my world of designer labels and mansions.

So I drive us under threat, until it’s hard to remember I don’t want to be there.

Until it’s too late to turn back.

HOSTAGE is a dangerous standalone romance by New York Times bestselling authors Skye Warren and Annika Martin. It’s set in the same world as PRISONER, but can read separately!

    EXCERPT:

A calm comes over me. “Are you going to kill me, too?”

“So far, you haven’t shown you can follow orders very well, have you?”

“I won’t tell on you,” I blurt out.

    He snorts.

We’re heading west, out of the city. The party seems like a million years ago. They’ll be sitting down for dinner now. Wondering where I am. Will they think I left?

The man’s face is in shadows. Streetlamps flash over his face as the van moves along, revealing a nose carved out of granite and a strong jaw. I wouldn’t call him handsome. He’s too rough-hewn for that, like someone forgot to sand over the angles.

    “Please—”

“Be quiet.” His soft menace is directed at me this time. I shrink in my seat.

We’re going into a run-down suburb, Westdale or Ferndale or something, a place with a lot of little tiny box homes. It’s a place I never go. We wind through the streets, deeper and deeper.

It’s hard to even look at him. That means acknowledging what’s happening to me. This is real. I may never make it out of this alive. That’s what I think when I turn my head to the side, glance at him from beneath low lashes. Which makes his gray Henley and dark-wash jeans seem way too ordinary. If this were the day I was going to die, wouldn’t he be wearing something more dramatic?

But that’s just wishful thinking from my panicked mind. He can hurt me wearing anything. I’m so deep in danger it’s hard to breathe.

He slows on a far block and turns. The van headlights hit overgrown weeds and the charred remains of a house. The place burned at one time, long ago.

He circles around and goes into the alley behind it. He shoves it into park and does something to the wires that make it shut off. He turns to me. “I’m gonna get out and deal with this guy. If you move out of this seat, I’ll kill you. And if, by some miracle, you manage to get away, I’m going to kill everybody you called on this phone in the last month. Can you guess how? I’ll give you a hint. A meat hook is involved.”

I suck in a breath. He doesn’t bother to wait for my answer. He gets out, yanks open the back door, and drags the man out—I can tell by the thuds. More punching sounds come from behind the van. The groans and garbled pleas sound worse and worse.

I huddle in my seat, listening to a man get beaten to death.

Bile rises up in my throat. I have only a few seconds to decide what to do—throw up in the van or throw up outside. He’s told me not to leave. He’s threatened my life, threatened to snap my neck. But I have an entire lifetime of my mother’s voice in my head. I have sixteen years of decorum forcing me to fumble for the door handle and push my way out.

I make it two feet away before dropping to my hands and knees and throwing up in the weeds behind the place. For all I know, he’ll kill me for this. For all I know, he’d have killed me for doing this in the van. He’s insane.

There’s not much that lands on the ground. A bottle of smartwater and some strawberries don’t leave a lot to vomit, but my stomach still heaves again and again until I’m sore, until I’m choking on bile, wrung dry.

I sit back on my feet, wiping my face, panting, one hand on the rough concrete, head down. The sounds back there have changed. There’s this grunting and a grinding sound, then a crack. It makes me want to throw up all over again.

If he’s going to kill me, I’d rather not see it coming. I guess I hope he does it fast. That’s what they always say in movies.

I hear a thump in the back of the van and then the sound of the door shutting. Footsteps coming toward me.

I force my breathing to slow. He’s behind me. I stay still.

“You’ve never seen shit like this, have you?” he asks, his voice almost conversational.

It makes me shiver, how he can sound so normal after killing a man.

    My voice is low. “No.”

“You’ve only seen—what? Parties? Fancy shit?”

There’s judgment in his voice and something else. Curiosity? I can use that. I have to use that, because it’s the only tool I have. I sit back on my knees, brushing my hands against each other to wipe off the gravel. My white and pink dress is stained with blood and dirt. My cell phone is in his pocket. If I want to survive this, I need to persuade him to let me go.

“Parties,” I force myself to say in agreement. Make him see you as a person. “Tonight was my birthday party.”

    He doesn’t say anything.

I look up at him. His face is cast in shadows by the moon. Demonic. Unforgiving. I wonder how I look to him, down on the ground in a dirty alley.

“Please just let me go back there,” I whisper. “Nobody has to know.”

He lowers to his haunches and brushes a strand of slick hair from my face. His thumb lingers on my cheek, brushing over my skin. “You’re right,” he says, voice musing. “No one saw me take you. No one even knew I was there. No one has to know.”

“What does that mean?” I whisper.

He stands, sucking in a ragged breath. My heart pounds as his eyes move over me.

I’ve never felt so helpless, so alone. I’m a sacrifice, kneeling at the feet of a beautiful, brutal demon.

    High Stakes
    Betting Hearts
    by Lilly Cain
    Genre: Contemporary Romance, Rom-Com

All I ever wanted is happening this weekend.

Or at least it might happen. If I don't screw it up. A lot can go wrong when you are sneaking around a Las Vegas hotel between a poker tournament and a romance writer's convention. And secretly attending both. More can go wrong when the one man you ever really wanted is there too, and he's watching. He's like a spy on a mission, always trying to keep me out of trouble.

He saved me once from drowning. He's my brother's best friend and I've wanted him since I was old enough to know what that means. But for him I've been off limits, the stakes were too high.

How could I resist making him the hero of my book? How will he react when he finds out?

Warning: This book contains awkward situations, fan-girling, laughter, heat, and love!

Lilly Cain is a wild woman with a deep throaty laugh, plunging necklines and a great lover of all things sensual - perfume, chocolate, silk! She never has to worry about finding a date or keeping a man in line. She keeps her blond hair long and curly, wears beautiful clothes and loves loud music. Lilly lives her private life in the pages of her books.

All of the above is a bit of silliness. When not living up to her pen name, Lilly lives in Atlantic Canada, although she spent eight years in Bermuda, enjoying the heat and the pink sands. She returned to her homeland so she could see the changing of the seasons once again. When not writing she paints, swills coffee and vodka (but not together), and fights her writing pals for chocolate (true story).

Lilly is a single mom who loves reading and writing, dabbling in art and loving and caring for her two daughters. She loves romance and the freedom erotic fantasy provides her imagination. She loves the chilling moments in her novels as much as the steaming hot interludes. Her stories are an escape and a release, and she hopes that they can give you that power, too.
